Glaucoma Laser Treatment

Glaucoma laser treatment works in a variety of different ways to repair the optic nerve as well as alleviate the pressure that is caused by the presence of the disease. The type of glaucoma laser treatment that you receive will depend on the type of disease you have. There are many conditions that can cause glaucoma in an individual. Some are inherited while others are the result of an eye injury or illness. In some cases, people have an overgrown cataract that causes glaucoma. Many people with diabetes end up getting glaucoma as it is typified by a swelling of the area around the optic nerve.

If you are to get glaucoma laser treatment, you will have to see a specialist who is experienced at this type of surgery. Your eye doctor may perform this procedure in his or her office, or you might go to a clinic to have this procedure done. In most cases, you will go to an outpatient clinic.

You will be awake for the glaucoma laser treatment. The normal procedure is to put you under a twilight sleep so that you are awake but do not feel any sort of discomfort during the procedure. Depending on the extent of what you are having done, you may have to keep your eye bandaged for a day afterwards and will also have to keep it from the direct sunlight. Most eye doctors will give the patient dark glasses to keep the UV rays from harming the effects of the surgery. It will be important for you to rest your eyes after the surgery.

If you have a problem in both eyes, the eye doctor will normally work on the weak eye first. This is to insure that the glaucoma laser treatment is successful. You will then wait a week or so before having the second treatment. Most people relate that they feel very little discomfort over this type of laser surgery that has a remarkable success rate.

Glaucoma laser surgery is the last resort when it comes to dealing with glaucoma, but it is very effective. Many people are opting for this type of surgery from the start so that they do not have to use medications or drops for the eyes. In most cases, the glaucoma laser surgery is successful. In some cases, all of the vision is completely restored and in others, partial vision in restored.

Glaucoma used to be the primary cause of blindness in the United States. Thanks to new techniques perfected to treat this condition, less people are going blind than ever before. When caught early and treated correctly, glaucoma can, in many cases, be cured and blindness prevented. If your eye doctor has diagnosed you with glaucoma, you may want to consider trying glaucoma laser treatment as a way to treat and possibly cure this condition.
