Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty Problems

Selective laser trabeculoplasty is truly one of the miracles of modern science. It enables the doctor to be able to restructure the area around the iris to alleviate pressure from the optical nerve that can result in damage that causes blindness. But there are selective laser trabeculoplasty problems that can result if the procedure is not done correctly.

One of the most common selective laser trabecuoplasty problems that can occur is an infection in the eye. Your doctor will most likely want to follow up with you the day after your surgery to make sure that there is no sign of infection and will give you a list of what to look for.

Infection is not the only of the selective laser trabeculoplasty problems that can occur. Other problems can be a leakage in the area around the iris. This is why follow up care is so important when you are having this type of surgery. The selective laser used in the trabeculoplasty procedure is the latest in the industry. It has replaced the previous lasers that, although effective, have been replaced by even more effective lasers. The laser used in this surgery is called the Nd:YAG laser.

Lasers make surgery that used to be considered to be too intricate for regular surgery with traditional instruments. Thanks to laser surgery, there are many surgical procedures that are now available that were once considered to be impossible. Years ago, the thought of using lasers to treat glaucoma was unheard of. At that time, glaucoma was considered to be a sentence of blindness as it would gradually rob the person of their sight.

Today, lasers allow for intricate surgeries that would have been impossible years ago. Selective laser trabeculoplasty is just one of the surgeries that lasers now make possible. But no surgery is without its problems.

Selective laser trabeculoplasty problems are rare, but can occur in some cases. The surgery is done in a clinical setting and prior to being released, you will be checked thoroughly by the doctor and nurses in charge. They will make sure that you are prepared to leave the clinic and that you are aware of any type of problems and what to look for. You will not be permitted to drive home from the clinic on your own as someone will have to drive you to the clinic and pick you up.

The thought of running into selective laser trabeculoplasty problems should not ward you off from getting this procedure if your eye doctor recommends this surgery. It is not something that you should be frightened of as it is a very common procedure and one that usually gets excellent results. No longer do you have to be destined to be unable to see if you have been diagnosed with glaucoma. Because of the many different treatments available for this disease, the prognosis today is better than ever before.
