Glaucoma Laser Surgery

Glaucoma laser surgery is one of the most advanced treatments of this disease of the eyes that can rob you of your sight. Glaucoma starts out slowly, causing little or no symptoms, until it destroys the optic nerve. The first symptom you may have with Glaucoma is loss of peripheral vision. This can gradually lead to total blindness if not treated. In many cases, people do not know that they have glaucoma until they get an eye exam or until the disease has set in and caused damage to the optic nerve.

Once a year, you should have a routine eye exam. This can detect glaucoma in its early stages. Glaucoma is caused by a build up of pressure in the eye area, called intraocular pressure. Many people who are at risk for glaucoma are older people who have a history of diabetes, although there is a form of glaucoma that strikes young children and even infants that causes blindness. The sad part about this type of glaucoma is that the children are too little to understand what is going on and often go blind before anything can be done to correct the condition.

An eye injury can also cause glaucoma, although this is thought to be a secondary cause of the disease and not primary. Other causes of glaucoma are an enlarged cataract or, in rare cases, a tumor in the eye. For the most part, however, it is an eye disease caused by too much optical pressure.

Depending on the type of glaucoma you have and the reason for the disease, you may have an option for several treatments. One treatment is glaucoma laser surgery. Glaucoma laser surgery involves removing the pressure from the eye with the use of non-invasive lasers. It works very much in the same way that cataract surgery works and is a process that proves to be successful in most cases.

If you find that treatment for glaucoma such as drops and medication are not working, you may want to discuss glaucoma laser surgery with your eye doctor. Years ago, before this type of surgery was created, it was impossible to treat certain forms of glaucoma that had progressed to the point where drugs or drops could no longer help. Thanks to the use of lasers as a way to perform non invasive surgery, there have been many strides made in this field of medicine.

Glaucoma eye surgery can very well save your vision. Blindness does not have to be the end result for someone suffering from glaucoma any longer. Laser surgery can work on the optic nerve and make repairs that were never available before. Because of glaucoma laser surgery, many people who are suffering with glaucoma and are facing blindness have now been able to regain their full sight and lead healthier and happier lives. Best of all, the glaucoma laser surgery has given them the chance to be able to see clearly once again.
